Should I move my WordPress site to a new host without breaking email?
#1
I’m trying to decide if I should move my WordPress site to a new host, but I’m worried about breaking my email setup. My current shared hosting bundles everything, and I’m not sure how to handle the MX records and mail server details without causing downtime for my team’s email.

I did a similar move last year. We left the email on the old server and pointed the DNS to the new host for the site, watching propagation overnight. Email stayed usable enough to avoid a panic, and then we switched mail when the site was solid.

Maybe the real problem is the stress about downtime, not the technical risk. I found I overestimated what could go wrong until I ran a test. Do you think the timing of the cutover is the main source of worry?

I tried moving once and we had a couple of bounced emails during the switch. Not catastrophic, but it taught me to expect hiccups and not pretend it would be perfect.

If it helps, maybe your mail is already hosted elsewhere and the move only concerns the web. That could change the math and make the decision less scary.
