Should i paint yellowed oak baseboards white and worry about upkeep?

I’ve just finished painting my living room a light grey, and now the old oak baseboards look really yellow and dated against it. I’m considering painting them a crisp white, but I’m worried about the long-term upkeep, especially with scuffs and dirt from daily life. Has anyone gone through this and regretted it later?

I did this last year with grey walls. The white trim looked sharp and made the room feel brighter. I used a semi gloss latex and kept a damp cloth handy for scuffs. It wipes clean, but high-traffic spots still show over time, so I touch up every couple of months.

Honestly, I spent a weekend debating whether the color shift was worth it. Maybe the problem is more lighting than the trim. I’d try sample boards and see how it reads in the morning sun before committing all the way.

Painted mine too and while it calmed the yellowing, I ended up needing to repaint a few spots after a chair scraped the edge. I kept a small jar of matching paint for quick touch ups, and that helped, but it’s still ongoing.

I keep thinking maybe the real issue isn’t the trim at all. Could be the oak grain catching glare or the floor color throwing it off. If you’re leaning toward it, test a small strip in a hidden corner and watch how it ages in different light and over a few days. What do you think?
