Should i pick 1440p or 4k for gaming with a 3070?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, and I’m stuck on whether the higher pixel density is actually worth the performance hit in the games I play. My 3070 handles my current 1080p screen easily, but I’m worried it might struggle to keep frames high at the ultra HD resolution without turning settings down a lot.

I did the jump from 1080p to 1440p with a 3070 and it felt smoother once I tuned a couple of things. The extra pixels are real but not a night and day change in every game.

In a few titles the 3070 balked at ultra high resolution on ultra settings so I dropped to 1440p and kept high quality textures. The frames stayed steady and I did not have to turn every setting down far.

I tested high resolution for a weekend and the boost in detail was nice but the frame loss was real in the big open world games. I ended up back at 1440p for daily play.

One trick I tried was using resolution scaling to push the image up while keeping frame rate up. It helped a lot in some shooters.

Are you planning to use upscaling or a variable refresh setup to bridge the gap?

I also started thinking about the desk space and the height of the monitor stand then came back to how the GPU handles the image. To me the choice feels tied to how much you value sharpness versus smoothness.

One more thing I learned is that lowering a few concessions like shadows or post processing can keep 1440p feeling good while keeping frames up.
