Should I pick a 27-inch 4K monitor or a 34-inch ultrawide for coding?

I’m trying to decide between a 27-inch 4K monitor and a 34-inch ultrawide for my home office setup, mainly for coding and some light photo editing. I’m worried the ultrawide’s lower pixel density might make text less sharp, but the extra horizontal space is really appealing for my workflow.

I went with a 27 inch 4K a while back and the text is truly crisp for coding. I run at the native resolution with 125% scaling and it feels like reading a book, not a screen. The windows line up nicely side by side, and I can keep a terminal on one side and the editor on the other without squinting.

I briefly tried a wide monitor and the lure of the extra space was real. After a week the text felt a touch softer, especially at the edges of bold code, and I kept reaching for zoom. For photo edits the layout was great, but I found font rendering not as clean as on 4K.

Do you think the real bottleneck is text sharpness or is it more about how you arrange windows and fonts in your editor?

I did a small side-by-side test: two 4K apps on the 27 and then swapped to the wide setup for a day. The wide gave more room for docs, but the sharpness loss nagged me when coding, so I stayed with the 27 in the end.
