Should I pick a 27-inch or 32-inch monitor for coding and editing on a desk?

I’m trying to decide between a 27-inch and a 32-inch monitor for my home office setup, where I mainly do coding and some light photo editing. I’m worried the bigger screen might be too overwhelming for my desk depth, which is only 30 inches, but I also don’t want to regret missing out on the extra workspace.

Been there. I swapped from a 27 to a 32 on a 30 inch desk and it started to feel crowded fast. I kept leaning closer to read code, and the edges kept pulling my focus. Ended up sticking with 27 and just organized windows so I felt space without scooting back.

I've got a 27 inch at about 28 inches distance. It handles coding great and I can split a couple of windows side by side. For light photo editing I keep a separate palette on the side monitor. A 32 would be nicer for swaths of image detail, but at the desk depth it looked and felt overwhelming to me.

I think the real win would be a flexible arm and an arm length test. A 32 might be fine if you pull the chair back a bit, but if you can't, you end up with neck turning and squinting. I once tried a bigger screen and it did not reduce headaches, just moved them.

Is there a way to test the distance with a temporary setup before committing to a purchase?
