Should I preheat my electric vehicle battery in cold weather to save range?

I’m trying to decide if I should preheat the battery on my EV every morning before my commute, even though it’s only around 45 degrees Fahrenheit out. I’ve heard it’s good for range and battery health, but it feels like a hassle to remember to plug in and use the app to schedule it for just a mild chill.

I tried preheating when it was in the mid 40s. The cabin came out warm and comfy, but I noticed a small hit to range on my 12 mile morning—about 2 to 3 percentage points if I started with a reasonable SoC. If you’re already at 60% or more, it’s barely noticeable.

I set a daily 15 minute preconditioning in the app for a week and tracked the SoC before leaving. The extra warming ate around 4% of SoC on a typical 25 mile trip, and the habit was messy: sometimes I forgot to plug in and the benefit vanished. The reminders helped, but it wasn’t consistent.

Do you think the real issue is not the chilly mornings but whether preheating is actually worth the hassle for your commute? Maybe test a few days with no preheat and compare.

I once drifted into a tangent about coffee and nearly forgot to plug in. The mornings felt rushed and the extra warm air was nice but the routine felt fragile. In the end I left the preconditioning out most days and just roll with the cold start when it happens.
