Should i pursue security+ after network+ for a junior security analyst role?

I’m trying to decide if pursuing the CompTIA Security+ is the right next step for me after getting my Network+ last year. I’ve been working in a helpdesk role for about eighteen months and I’m worried this certification might be too focused on theory without giving me the practical skills to actually move into a junior security analyst position.

I did the cert after Network+ and it helped me land a junior security analyst role. It gave me a solid baseline in concepts like risk, access controls, and incident response. The real win was the labs and setting up a small home lab to practice, which helped me talk shop with the security team in interviews.

I noticed a lot of the material felt theoretical until I forced myself to build a home lab and poke at real logs. The theory is necessary, but without hands-on practice you forget it fast.

For me it helped as a baseline, but I still needed to show concrete hands-on work—like a small incident response project or auditing logs—to prove I could operate on a SOC team.

Do you think the problem is really the cert, or is it finding enough hands-on practice in your current role to prove you can handle a junior security role?

I started chasing other certs and skipped this one for months, then realized I wasn't moving forward because I hadn't done a real project yet.

If you want to move into security, it's a reasonable next step but you should couple it with a small project or internship so you can point to actual work when you interview.
