Should I pursue the CompTIA Security+ now or wait for more hands-on experience?

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth pursuing the CompTIA Security+ right now, or if I should wait until I have more hands-on network admin experience. I’ve heard it’s a good baseline, but I’m worried it might be too theoretical without that foundation.

Had the cert on the horizon while I was still mostly poking at labs. It did give me a language to use with teammates and recruiters, even though most days I was still learning the ropes. The questions leaned on definitions and how things fit together, not a day in the life of a network admin, so it felt manageable without deep hands-on stuff.

I waited until I had a chunk of hands-on admin work under my belt, then tackled the cert. It helped with interviews and gave me a roadmap for what to study, but I wished I had run more real traffic through a lab to anchor the concepts.

I wonder if the real blocker isn't the cert but getting a real environment to practice in. I started with a cheap home lab and a few small projects, and I still felt unsure about some topics when the exam asked about policy versus procedure. Maybe you're chasing a baseline, but you might end up chasing a moving target.

Do you have a specific role in mind like security analyst or network admin, because that might decide if you pull the trigger now or wait until you’ve got more hands on?
