Should i pursue the CompTIA Security+ with help desk experience?

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth pursuing the CompTIA Security+ certification right now, as I have about two years of help desk experience but no formal security role. I’m worried it might be too broad without hands-on practice to back it up, and I’m not sure how employers really view it for someone trying to move into a junior security analyst position.

I was in a similar spot two years on help desk and I chased the Security+ as a signal more than a shield. Employers liked that I could speak the security basics in interviews even though I did not have a dedicated security role yet. I found it helpful to pair the study with a small hands on lab like a home network with basic logs and a simple incident scenario. Without real practice I felt the cert alone was thin.

The breadth is real and you can end up chasing every domain instead of solid practice. I did the prep and then focused on a few practical areas like user access basics and patching and I tried to run a tiny lab to see how alerts show up. It made the conversations in interviews feel more grounded even if the job still felt far away.

I tried studying while helping customers and I felt overwhelmed by the topics. I took practice tests but recruitment asked about what I had actually done with threat detection and I was a bit under prepared. I kept hoping the first junior role would be a bridge.

Maybe the real problem is the job market not the certs is there really a junior security role waiting for someone with two years on help desk?
