Should I rely on paper charts or digital tools to manage oceanic airspace?

I’m planning my first long-haul flight as a new private pilot and I’m a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of airspace and procedural charts I need to manage for the oceanic segment. How do you experienced pilots organize all that paperwork and data in the cockpit without it becoming a distraction during critical phases?

First long haul I felt buried under charts about airspace and routes. I kept one small binder with essential routes and a second with frequencies and weather notes. In the cockpit I used a simple checklist and a single notepad for quick notes about each segment. It bought me focus during climb and cruise, though I did forget to update a waypoint once and paid for it in the logs.

On the next leg I tried a tablet with digital files plus a printed quick reference. I kept the tablet on a small stand and only opened it when needed during the oceanic segment. My rule was to carry a minimal data packet and push the heavy charts out of view during critical phases so I could see the cross checks from the crew and the radios.

Sometimes I feel the issue is not the volume but how you map the tasks in your head under pressure. I kept a tiny clipboard for the oceanic leg and ran a dry mock handoff before departure, which helped a bit but not always. The moment you rely on it too much you lose situational feel and then you chase memory instead of data.

Weather chatter and solar storms can drift your brain away from the charts even when you plan. I found myself glancing at the sky more than the pages and then circling back to the route once the tape ran out. Do you think the real problem is not the charts but how you plan to use them in the moment?
