Should i rent a gas car for a long ev road trip with sparse charging?

I’m trying to plan a longer road trip in my EV this summer and the public charging situation along my route looks pretty sparse. I’m starting to wonder if I should just rent a gas car for the trip instead, even though I’d prefer to use my own vehicle.

I’ve done a few long EV trips and the first thing I learned is to map every charging stop with a cushion. I used PlugShare and the car’s planner, and I still ended up detouring to chargers that were online. If your route has big gaps, plan a charging stop every 2–3 hours or pick corridors with two fast chargers within a short detour. It takes longer than you expect.

I planned a trip last year and halfway I questioned the whole thing. Chargers were often offline or busy. We ended up overnighting near a hotel with a charger, which added time and stress. If you can, book stays with charging access and keep a flexible schedule. It helps a bit even if you prefer to use your own car.

I booked a couple of extra networks and kept a small power bank as a backup. It helped when a stall was busy, but we still added about an hour per long day for charging and relocation. Still, the day kept moving in the end.

Do you mind sharing the route or the stretches you worry about for charging?
