Should i replace my VHF radio with DSC for coastal cruising or keep the old one?

I’m trying to decide if I should replace my old VHF radio with a newer model that has DSC, or if keeping the old one is fine for coastal cruising. My main concern is whether the digital calling feature is something I’d actually use, or if it’s just an extra complexity.

I kept my old VHF ticking for years and only upgraded when the unit started acting flaky in storms. Coastal cruising with the old radio worked fine for me; I could call on channel 16 or a working channel and usually get a reply. The digital calling features sounded nice in theory, but in practice they were a setup headache: you have to program an MMSI, keep the data current, and you still rely on others having compatible gear. It felt like extra complexity that didn't buy me much reliability day to day.

I borrowed a friend's newer radio for a season with DSC and the extra features. It looked impressive on paper, but I kept tripping over programming steps and fault messages. I forgot to renew the MMSI once and suddenly some calls wouldn’t go through. After a few trips, I abandoned the curiosity and went back to the old setup, trusting voice calls and a spare handheld as backup.

Do you actually need digital calling if your current setup handles voice calls fine in coastal waters?

I ended up keeping the old main unit and added a cheap handheld as a backup. When the main goes down, it buys you time to figure out the next move, and it avoids tying everything to a single box.
