Should i set a post-length minimum to improve forum quality?

I’ve been running a small forum for a few years, and lately I’ve noticed a real drop in the quality of discussion—people just post quick reactions without really reading the thread. I’m thinking about implementing a post-length minimum to encourage more thoughtful contributions, but I worry it might just lead to a bunch of fluff and annoy the regulars who post concise, helpful replies. Has anyone else tried setting a floor like this?

Yep, we tried something similar a year ago. We set a minimum length of about 120 words. First week the posts looked more capacious, then engagement sagged and several regulars dropped off. A few long posts were still mostly fluff with a couple of real points buried in, and the overall signal didn’t improve.

We tried a length rule too, and it was a rollercoaster. Initially threads felt meatier and people included specifics, but soon some folks learned to pad with quotes and filler to hit the line. After a while the benefit faded and a few active members started complaining that concise, on-point replies were being punished.

Could the real problem be something else entirely? I watched what actually sparked replies and it wasn’t length. Threads that started with a clear question or direct request tended to take off, even if short. Maybe we’re chasing the wrong lever and the signal is in how topics are framed and moderated.

One small experiment that stuck for a bit: a weekly thread where people summarized one takeaway from a read and added one concrete action. It drew a few extra thoughtful replies, but it didn’t reverse the boredom everywhere and sometimes the same names still carried the thread. I’m not convinced this is the root cause.
