Should i sign an NDA before discussing a freelance project scope?
#1
I just had a potential client ask me to sign an NDA before we even discussed the project scope. I’m not sure if I should be wary of this or if it’s a normal step, especially since I’m new to freelancing. The agreement seemed very broad, covering any information exchanged, and I’m concerned it might limit my ability to work with other clients in the same industry later on.

I ran into that NDA before we even discussed any work. I told them we should talk scope first and I’m wary of signing something that’s too broad.

Seems common in some studios and agencies, but I’ve learned to push back and ask for a quick summary of what’s confidential and what isn’t.

I ended up asking for a mutual confidentiality clause and a carve-out that lets me keep working with other clients in the same space. It made the signer nervous but I felt safer.

I once signed a document that turned out to be a trap for future gigs; it kept me from talking to two competitors for months.

I asked for a scope-focused version and a time box; they hesitated but then sent something smaller.

Do you think the issue is really protecting their info or is it more about locking you into their ecosystem?

If you’re new to freelancing, it can feel like a power move; I just filed it away and kept talking about deliverables until we had a real plan.
