Should I start a statin for high LDL at 42 or try lifestyle changes first?

My doctor mentioned starting me on a statin at my last check-up because my LDL cholesterol came back high. I’m only 42 and otherwise feel healthy, so I’m hesitant about taking a daily medication for what feels like a silent issue. I’m wondering if others in a similar situation decided to start one and what that conversation with their GP was really like.

I was 42 with a high LDL and my doctor mentioned a statin. I felt mostly fine, so I hesitated, worried about taking a daily med for a silent issue. We talked about trying lifestyle changes first—dialing in the diet, more movement—and rechecking in a few months. When the numbers stayed stubborn, I gave it a try. I couldn’t feel a difference, and any muscle tiredness after workouts was mild and seemed tied to activity, not the pill.

When I finally asked about side effects, the doctor walked me through what to watch for and suggested a low dose to start. I started it, but after a busy week I missed a couple days, and the numbers still seemed stable, so I kept going. I did notice a little achiness in my calves for a week or two, but it faded with easier workouts and staying hydrated.

I keep wondering if the problem is really one number or if there are bigger risks we ignore. The risk scores feel abstract, and sometimes I wish there was a clear path rather than a split between meds and lifestyle.

Do you feel like you just had to decide on the spot, or did your GP give you time to think about options and what would happen if you skip it?
