Should i start meds for high blood pressure or try lifestyle changes first?

I’ve been told my blood pressure is a bit high at my last two check-ups, and my doctor mentioned starting a medication. I’m really hesitant because I feel fine and worry about side effects, but I also know it’s important to get it under control. Has anyone else gone through this decision and found lifestyle changes alone were enough, or did you end up needing the prescription?

I hear you. I was told my blood pressure was creeping up last year. I started floating in a simple routine—walk 45 minutes most days, cut late-night snacking, and kept a tiny log of meals and activities. After about eight weeks the numbers moved a bit, but not enough to feel safe. My doctor said we could try a low dose so I would not have to worry about the long-term risk, and I was scared of side effects. The med turned out to be manageable for me and the readings stabilized within a couple of months, which was a relief. I still work on the basics every week, but the pill feels like a safety net more than a forever fix.

I tried focusing on diet and movement first. Salt cut back, more vegetables, and a daily 30-minute walk. After six months my numbers moved from the low to mid 150s/90s down to around 140/88, but they never stayed in the normal range consistently. Eventually the doctor suggested adding medication because the trend looked stubborn. It wasn’t a big drama, but it did feel like a pivot I hadn’t fully expected.

I’m torn between wanting to trust the numbers and fearing the side effects. I don’t have symptoms, so it’s easy to tell myself it’s fine. Do you think the issue is just a number on the cuff or could stress and sleep be driving it?

Last week I tried keeping a simple habit log just for a week, and I kept up the morning stretch and a glass of water after waking. No dramatic change, but the day felt calmer, and I actually slept a little better. It’s tempting to think a pill is the quick fix, but that tiny routine felt like something I could control anyway. Still, I’m not sure what the right balance is, and I hate how uncertain this whole thing feels sometimes.
