Should i start meds for stage 1 hypertension or try lifestyle changes first?

I’ve been trying to get my blood pressure under control with diet and walking, but my last two readings at the pharmacy were still in the stage 1 hypertension range. My doctor mentioned possibly starting a medication, but I’m worried about side effects and committing to a daily pill. Has anyone else managed to avoid medication at this stage, or did you find starting one was the right move?

Been in the same boat. I cut out added salt, ate more veggies, and tried a 30 minute walk most evenings. My numbers would drift around the same range, with a few days dipping a touch lower. I started worrying about a daily pill and the side effects too. It didn’t feel like I was failing, but it also didn’t feel like I could outpace a prescription.

I did end up taking a small daily pill after a while. The side effects were mild—some temporary fatigue at first, nothing lasting. After a couple of weeks the readings settled into a steadier range. It wasn’t a cure, but it made the bumps less scary and I could focus on other habits again.

I keep thinking the problem could be more than what I eat or walk. Some days I felt calm and slept well, other days I got jittery after meals or fights with my partner and the numbers jumped. I started using a home monitor and found the results were all over the place, which made me doubt the whole setup.

Question for you: did your clinician ever mention secondary causes or a trial of lifestyle alone might not be enough? I’m curious how others decide when to pull the trigger on meds.
