Should I swap the rear shock for a smoother ride on my sportbike?

I’ve been trying to get a smoother ride out of my old sportbike, and I’m wondering if swapping to a different rear shock is the right move. The current one feels really harsh on bumpy back roads, but I’m not sure if that’s just the nature of the bike or if a better aftermarket unit would actually help.

I swapped a softer rear shock on my old sportbike last season and tried a long stretch of rough roads after. It did feel a bit smoother and the big hits into the seat were quieter for a while, but the gains were small and I still hit rough patches. I kept tires and tried preload and rebound tweaks but it never felt perfect.

From my side it might be more than the shock. Tire setup could be part of the problem and so could ride height or how the forks react to chop. I changed tire pressure once and it felt dramatically different on bad roads for a day but then it settled back.

I bought an aftermarket unit and rode with it for a few weeks. It did feel firmer at first and then I found it was too soft when I started catching big bumps and would lose rear end control. I did not keep it long and went back to stock with some shim adjustments. Do you have a sense of what else you would check first?

Maybe the problem is not the shock at all and the ride is telling a different story. The frame or rear subframe geometry could be masking how the ride should feel and changing the shock may not fix the core issue.
