Should i switch my toddler's iron supplement for gentler constipation relief?
#1
My 18-month-old has been on the same iron supplement for months, but his constipation has gotten so much worse lately. I’m wondering if switching to a different type might help, maybe one that’s gentler on his little stomach, but I’m nervous about making a change without a clear reason.

We went through this with our toddler. The constipation got worse after months on a liquid iron supplement. After the pediatrician suggested trying a different formulation, we switched and noticed the stools loosened a bit, though not dramatically.

I’d be nervous about changing without advice because the doctor needs to weigh whether the constipation is from the supplement or something else.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the supplement at all but dehydration, too much dairy, or a change in toilet habits at that age.

If you do switch, keep an eye on how often he poops and if there’s blood, and report back to the pediatrician.

We tried chelated forms that claim to be gentler; didn't see a huge difference but the GI symptoms were slightly better.

I drifted into thinking maybe we should try more fiber, like pureed peaches or prunes, but that felt risky.

Would you consider asking the pediatrician if constipation is the main issue here or if there's another cause you should rule out?
