Should i take the promotion into management if i hate office politics?

I’ve been offered a promotion that would move me from an individual contributor role into my first management position. The thing is, I’m really hesitant because I’ve seen how much of the job seems to be about navigating office politics and mediating between different personalities, and I’m not sure my skills are a good fit for that.

I took a first management role a year ago. It wasn’t glamorous; a lot of it was listening and juggling competing priorities. The politics stuff surprised me, but I found that being consistent, sharing decisions openly, and doing regular one on one chats helped a bit.

I wanted the promo too, but the day to day was mostly meetings and mediations. I asked for a mentor early on and tried to quantify small wins, but the social game still wore me down.

I would try to test the waters without the title first. Take on a few leadership tasks, document what actually moves metrics, see if you like guiding people more than own work.

Is the real barrier the politics or the idea of managing people at all? Maybe the issue is more about fit than the role itself.
