Should I try dropshipping for a new product line with tight margins?

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth the effort to set up a dropshipping model for a new product line I want to test. The margins are already tight, and I’m worried about losing control over shipping times and customer experience if I go that route.

I tried a similar setup last quarter. Margins stayed razor-thin after fees, and a few orders were delayed because the supplier was slow. It felt risky for a first test.

We ran a tiny pilot with direct-from-manufacturer fulfillment to see if speed would hold up. Shipping times were reasonable, but the per unit cost crept up and margins got tight quickly.

Maybe the bigger issue isn't the fulfillment model but whether the product is actually ready for the market. We did some ads, got cheap clicks, then a flood of questions about sizing and durability—told me urgency was masking a deeper fit problem.

If you need a gut check, is the real bottleneck marketing funnel or product desirability? The plan feels risky and I’m not sure I’m answering the right question.
