Should I up my antidepressant dose or try a different plan if it stops helping?

I’ve been on the same antidepressant for about two years and it feels like it’s just stopped working. My doctor mentioned the possibility of a dosage adjustment, but I’m worried that just increasing it might not be the right move if the medication itself isn’t effective for me anymore. I’m curious if others have gone through this and what their doctors suggested.

I've been on the same antidepressant for a long time, and when they mentioned a higher dose I was wary. After a slow uptitration I did notice a lift at first—more energy, a lighter mood—but after a couple of weeks the effect faded. It felt like chasing a moving target and I worried about messing with sleep and appetite.

I ended up trying a switch to a different class after the plateau. It was rough at first, new side effects, but overall I felt steadier for longer once things settled in. It wasn’t a miracle, but it felt more reliable than the bump I tried first.

Some folks at my clinic tried augmentation, adding a second med at a low dose. The mood lift was modest, and the tradeoffs with side effects weren’t great for me, so we backed off. It did give me a data point to discuss with my doctor though.

Do you think the real issue is the med not working anymore, or could it be something else like sleep, stress, or burnout? I’m stuck looping through these possibilities too.
