Should I upgrade my street bike suspension or work on my riding skills?

I’m trying to decide if I should upgrade the suspension on my street bike or just learn to ride better within its limits. The stock setup feels a bit vague when I push it through a fast, bumpy corner, and I’m not sure if throwing money at new cartridges and a shock will fix a skill issue instead.

I swapped the forks and shock on my street bike last year because fast bumpy corners felt vague and unsettled. After the swap it did feel firmer and more controlled over potholes, but it didn’t magically fix the swing of my head and hands. I still rode tense until I slowed down, relaxed my grip, and learned to look through the turn instead of at the front wheel. If you’re chasing stability, a proper suspension setup helps, but it won’t replace good line choice and body position.

I tried chasing the problem with grip first—new tires and a touch higher air pressure—and the bike felt steadier, but the corner still demanded attention when I pushed hard. The real gains came from practice: dialing in where I looked, how I breathed, and how I weighted the bike on entry. A few sessions, and I could tell the difference more than after any part swap.

One time I blamed the bike, but after borrowing a friend’s bike with different geometry I realized the issue might be how I was entering the turn. The bike wasn’t the limit, my perception was. It’s frustrating because you want a quick fix, but maybe the real problem is reading the surface and planning the line a few seconds earlier.

Do you think the problem is the bike or the rider? I kept asking that after a couple of sessions and still wasn’t sure, but it kept me from rushing to throw money at a fix without a clear signal.
