Should i use passthrough mode for gaming on quest 3, or stick to full vr?

I just got a Quest 3 and I’m trying to figure out if I should use the passthrough mode for gaming or stick to full VR worlds. I loaded up a mixed reality demo and it felt weirdly isolating to see my real room but have digital things layered on top of it.

I tried passthrough a couple of times on the Quest 3 and it felt off. Seeing the real couch through the game layers pulled me out of the action. I ended up using full VR most of the time and only switched passthrough on when I needed to navigate the room.

I did try passthrough for a quick AR style scavenger task in a clear space. It helped me spot the coffee table before swinging the controller into it. I played about 20 minutes, kept stepping back to check the wall, and then quit to full VR because I felt more immersed that way. The effect was less about the game and more about safety and space awareness.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the tech at all, but whether your play space is set up for it. I kept bumping into the couch while using passthrough and it pulled me out of the moment. Do you think the isolation you feel could be a sign your room layout is demanding more than the headset can blend?

Honestly I spent a night thinking about how the headset sits, whether the passthrough edge alignment is the culprit, and if a shorter warm up helps. Then I drifted to lighting and air flow, coffee on my mind, and it all came back to the same point: mixed reality feels new and a little awkward, and I’m not sure which mode will feel right tomorrow.
