Should I use the dealer's plan for oil changes or switch to my mechanic?

I just bought a used 2018 sedan and the dealer included a pre-paid maintenance plan. I’m trying to figure out if it’s actually worth using for my next oil change, or if I should just go to my usual independent mechanic like I always have.

I tried the prepaid maintenance plan on my used sedan. On paper it looked like a bargain, but after the first oil change I found the total cost wasn’t much lower than what I’d pay at my independent mechanic, especially once you factor in filters and the cabin service. They also tried to upsell a few things I didn’t want.

From a shop guy’s angle, prepaid plans only add up if you drive enough to reach the break‑even point and if the plan covers parts you’d actually replace. I ran the numbers against a synthetic oil change at the neighborhood shop, and I’d have to use it for several visits a year to make it worth it.

I actually called the dealer and read the fine print. The plan says oil changes plus a basic inspection, but the oil grade and filter type can be constrained, and extra items are billed separately. I ended up buying nothing and sticking with my usual place.

What matters more to you, price or flexibility?
