Should i walk away or factor timing belt replacement into my offer?
#1
I’m looking at a used car that seems perfect, but the seller mentioned the timing belt was last changed over 90,000 miles ago. I know that’s a critical maintenance item, but I’m not sure if I should walk away or just factor the cost of replacing it immediately into my offer.

That timing belt note is a red flag. If it’s an interference engine, a belt failure can wreck the whole engine. I’d want proof it’s been replaced recently, or I’d push the price down hard.

I asked for the full service history and set up a pre purchase inspection. The belt hadn’t been touched, and the shop said replacement would likely involve the belt plus the water pump.

Took it for a test drive, it seemed fine, but I mentally budgeted a chunk for the belt job if I kept it. In the end I passed because other wear didn’t feel worth it.

Is the real issue the maintenance history more than the belt itself?
