Should I worry about a consistently low heart rate on beta-blockers?
#1
I’ve been on a beta-blocker for my hypertension for about a year, and my doctor just mentioned it might be contributing to my consistently low heart rate, which sometimes dips into the 50s. I feel fine most days, just a bit more tired, but I’m wondering if others have experienced this and when it became a concern worth revisiting the medication.

I’ve been on a med for a while too. My resting heart rate sits around the low 50s and I mostly feel fine, just a little more tired in the afternoon. When I asked my doctor they said the dose can push HR down and to watch for dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or confusion. We kept the same med but I did slower workouts and more breaks. It’s been a few months and nothing dramatic happened, but I don’t feel great about it either.

I had the same thing for about a year, resting 52–58 and feeling okay most days. Then I got winded climbing stairs a bit more, and a quick checkup didn’t show anything alarming. The clinician suggested lowering the dose and watching how I feel during workouts. After that I felt a bit better energy-wise, but it never went away completely.

From a clinical angle, beta blocker works by blunting the sinus node, so resting rates in the 50s aren’t unusual. But if you’re fatigued, exercising is harder, or you’ve had dizziness, that could mean the dose is a bit heavy for you or something else is going on. It’s not a hard line, just a signal to check with the clinician.

I started using a slow walk to test how I feel when the pace changes, and I notice my breath and heart feel different if I push a little harder than talking pace. Anyway, I still wonder if the 50s is the real issue or if the fatigue is masking something else, has anyone measured how this lines up with medication timing or activity?
