Should posting a bike recovery video with a confrontation be okay for views?

I saw a video of a guy getting his stolen bike back by tracking its AirTag and confronting the thief, and now it’s got millions of views. It felt satisfying to watch, but I keep wondering if posting that kind of public confrontation online is just encouraging risky behavior for clicks.

I watched it and felt a jolt of satisfaction, but then the doubts hit me. Public confrontation tends to invite unpredictability, and the person filming is part of the chaos. Legal risk, potential harm, and the way it can spiral online are real. It’s not obvious that a viral moment actually helps the victim in the long run.

I once reported a bike theft and tried to use a tracker to recover it. The police asked for evidence, the case dragged on, and I never got the bike back. The video would have felt better than the outcome.

Sometimes I wonder if the real problem is the urge for a neat ending. Do we chase those viral moments because the internet rewards it more than helping victims? The internet loves a clear winner, but theft rarely leaves you with a clean finale.

If you’re thinking about filming, weigh the safety and legality first. AirTag or similar tech can help locate a bike, but rushing to confront someone on camera could put bystanders at risk and put you in harm’s way. Better to involve authorities and focus on prevention.
