Should the new Karate Kid keep the name if it's a soft reboot?
#1
I just watched the new Karate Kid movie, and I’m honestly confused about where this franchise is going now. It feels less like a direct sequel and more like a soft reboot that’s trying to set up a whole new generation, but it still uses the same name. Does anyone else feel like the connection to the original films is getting stretched too thin?

I felt the same. It feels like they’re using the name to pull in new viewers while hoping the old crowd sticks around, and the links to the original movies aren’t as tight as they used to be.

Went in expecting a straight Karate Kid sequel, walked out with more teen drama and new faces. The thread to the original feels faint by design.

If I try to answer, I’d say they’re aiming for a soft reboot that can live on streaming and in schools and merch, not just a cinema knot. But I’m not confident that’s the right read; could just be tonal mismatch.

Part of me wonders if the real problem is nostalgia fatigue, or that a long-running franchise is hard to keep fresh. Then I circle back to the same question: does keeping the name help or hurt the new story?
