Should we build a custom project management dashboard or buy a ready-made tool?

I’m trying to decide if we should build a custom project management dashboard from scratch or buy a pre-built solution. The upfront cost of a ready-made tool is giving me pause, but I’m worried the time and resource drain of developing our own will end up being a false economy.

We tried something similar last year. We underestimated data sources, API locks, and getting users to actually use it. The upfront work looked small, but by month three we were rethinking the whole architecture.

We bought a ready-made tool. It deployed fast, but customization was clumsy; we ended up adding wrappers and a couple internal automations anyway. It did save us months on the launch.

Is the real problem the tool or the data quality and process clarity? We learned our team fed bad data and used manual workarounds regardless of what we chose.

We started building from scratch and got stuck on tech choices, hiring, and feature requests. After two sprints we paused and bought a license because morale and velocity tanked.
