Should we set clear guidelines for civil discussion on our hobby forum?

I’ve been running a small hobby forum for about a year, and lately I’m struggling with how to handle the inevitable disagreements that pop up in threads. I want to keep things civil without being too heavy-handed, but I’m not sure where to draw the line between healthy debate and something that starts to poison the well for everyone else.

I run a tiny forum too. We tried a soft code of conduct and asked people to pause before posting heated replies. We started logging each thread that blew up, and after a month the number of heated exchanges per week dropped from about 3–4 to one or none.

Maybe the real friction isn't just tone. Sometimes it feels like the topic itself invites contest, and folks want to win instead of listen.

One time I drifted off topic in a heated thread about a model kit, and someone started arguing about paint finishes. We left a note in a separate lounge for tangents, and the main thread cooled a bit. Not sure it solved the core issue.

I try to respond slowly, give a one sentence recap of what each side said, and avoid echoing personal jabs. It helps a little but I still worry about enabling quiet cynicism.
