Should we use a popular vote or a panel of judges for our art challenge?

I’m trying to organize a small art challenge for our local group’s online page, but I’m stuck on how to pick a winner fairly. Some people think it should be a popular vote, but that just turns it into a popularity contest, while others say a panel of judges is too formal for our community.

I tried a public vote last year and it felt like a popularity contest even though we said it was about art not attitude.

We kept it informal and used a small panel of three local artists from different backgrounds We asked them for a quick score on five criteria and added the points.

Maybe the bigger issue is not fairness but how much effort folks want to put into this project Do we really need a winner or would a rotating showcase be enough?

I tried blind submissions and then a short group talk to pick the piece that stood out for technique not popularity It was not flawless but it felt fairer and we got feedback that helped
