Solving quadratic equations step by step for returning students
#1
I’m a returning student trying to brush up on algebra after about a decade away from any serious math, and I’ve hit a wall with solving quadratic equations step by step. My nephew asked me for help with his homework, and I realized I couldn’t confidently walk him through the process without constantly second-guessing myself. I need to get this down so I can actually explain it, not just nod along.

I started by watching a few free YouTube videos, but they jumped around too much between methods like factoring and the quadratic formula. Then I picked up a used copy of “Algebra for Dummies” by Mary Jane Sterling for about eight dollars at a thrift store, which seemed perfect, but the examples in the book assume you remember perfect squares from years ago—which I don’t. I tried practicing with a basic online calculator, but that only gave me answers, not the steps, so I ended up even more confused about when to use completing the square versus factoring, or maybe I’m mixing up which form the equation needs to be in first.

For someone who needs to rebuild from the ground up, what single method would you recommend I focus on first to consistently solve quadratic equations by hand, and what small daily practice routine actually helped you make the process click?
