Spent hours compiling best of lists for 90s action movies

I've narrowed my 2023 horror watchlist down to two lists and I can't decide. One prioritizes critical darlings with high Rotten Tomatoes scores, heavy on arthouse and slow-burn stuff like Skinamarink and When Evil Lurks. The other focuses on audience ratings and crowd-pleasers, things like Talk to Me and Scream VI, which seem more straightforwardly scary. I've seen enough mediocre horror to know that critical acclaim doesn't always mean a good time, but I also don't want to waste an evening on something shallow. I only have time for ten films this month, and I'm trying to choose which list to follow as the baseline. Should I go with the critical consensus and risk a few boring watches for the sake of artistic merit, or should I stick purely to the most highly rated by general audiences, which might be safer but could miss something truly innovative?

Stick with the crowd-pleasers. You want a good time, not a slogfest. Skip the boring arty stuff.
