I just tried to play a simple game of charades with my family over video call, and it was a total disaster. The lag made it impossible to guess anything in time, and my terrible acting through a tiny screen just made everyone confused. Has anyone found a good alternative that actually works for this situation?

We tried something similar and it helped a bit. We switched to a shared doodle board during the call. One person drew the clue and everyone guessed aloud. The lag was still there, but guessing felt faster than watching someone mime through a tiny window.

Another night we used Heads Up on a phone held up to the camera. The actor has the phone, others shout guesses. It felt smoother because the clue is big and readable, and you only have to worry about the act, not the whole screen.

I also tried a chat version: someone drops a clue in the chat and people type their guesses. It kept pace better, but it lost the energy of a live moment and a few folks forgot to look at the chat.

We tried splitting into two teams and rotating rounds so no one had to watch for too long. It helped with attention, but the lag still sneaks in when a round drags.

Do you think the real blocker is the lag or the pace and expectations of the game?

Kept rounds short, around 30 seconds, and called it when nothing lands. It felt imperfect but honest, and at least we ended on laughs rather than confusion.

Some people loved the drawing version, others missed the acting. The best part was the inevitable goofy sketches and the kids laughing at the worst ones.
