What caused the main character's sudden power-up in this arc?

I just finished watching the latest episode of that big shonen battle anime, and I’m honestly a bit lost on the main character’s sudden power-up. It felt like it came out of nowhere, and the rules they established for the power system earlier in the arc seem completely ignored. Has anyone else felt this disconnect, or am I just overthinking the narrative convenience here?
