What should i do if my insurer non-renews my policy after a minor accident?

I just got a notice that my insurer is dropping my coverage because of a minor at-fault accident from last year, and I’m not sure what to do next. Is it common for a company to non-renew a policy over one incident, and does this make it much harder to find a new one?

That can happen. Some insurance companies drop a policy after an at fault accident, even a minor one, because they reassess risk. It does tend to make getting a new policy harder since many carriers treat that as a red flag and may quote higher premiums or require more limits.

I went through something similar last year. One minor accident and my insurance company canceled mid term. It took me weeks to get quotes and some carriers would only offer high deductibles or non standard policies.

Could this be more about underwriting rules than the accident itself? I keep wondering if it’s the state rules or the company tightening up.

I started calling brokers and asked for quotes with higher deductibles; a couple came back with options that felt reasonable after a bit of back and forth.
