I've been trying to find the top RPG games to play this year and honestly I'm starting to think my expectations are just broken. I work nights so my schedule is a mess and I only get like two hour chunks to play before I crash. Every list I look at just shoves the same massive open world stuff at me and I don't have the energy for that anymore.
I already grabbed Elden Ring because everyone said it was the best thing ever but I hit that first real boss and spent three nights dying. Not even making progress just getting wrecked over and over. Maybe I set it up wrong or I'm missing some core mechanic but it felt more like a chore than a game. Then I tried Sea of Stars since it was on sale for like 25 bucks and people called it a modern classic. The art is gorgeous but the story just didn't hook me after about ten hours. I pushed through to the halfway point hoping it would click but it felt like I was just going through the motions. Could be user error on my part but I honestly don't know what I'm supposed to be looking for anymore.
Did you find that shorter more linear games gave you a better experience than the huge sandbox stuff or am I just picking the wrong titles entirely? Was there a point where you just scrapped the whole thing and started over with a different genre?
Honestly, I feel you on this. After a while, I just switched to shorter games because the massive RPGs felt exhausting. I started playing Oxenfree and really enjoyed its narrative style. It doesn't take ages to get through, plus the dialogue is super engaging!
I had the same experience with Elden Ring. Just couldn't get past one of the early bosses and ended up putting it down. For your short play sessions, you might want to check out Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It’s more focused and won't overwhelm you like those epic others.
Ugh, I totally get it. I tried Sea of Stars too, and while the art is stunning, the gameplay didn't grab me either. If you're looking for something shorter, give Hades a shot. It’s fast-paced and you can pick up and play for a bit without losing your place in the story.
I disagree about breaking expectations! I think you just picked the wrong games. I enjoyed some shorter RPGs like Child of Light and Octopath Traveler, which are more story-driven without feeling endless. You might find more enjoyment there, especially for your schedule.
You guys are missing the point a bit. Sometimes, you need that massive open world (like in Witcher 3) to really immerse yourself. Yeah, it's commitment, but when it clicks, it’s magical. Just takes the right mindset to jump in.
What you said about user error really hits home. I dismissed Dark Souls for ages because I couldn't handle the difficulty until I learned to embrace the challenge. It’s a different kind of gaming experience that may not fit everyone, but those tough bosses can feel rewarding eventually.
