What’s a simple way to invite neighbors to a friendly board game night?

I’m trying to organize a casual board game night for people in my apartment building, but I’m worried it might be awkward if only a couple of neighbors show up. How do you create a low-pressure event that actually feels welcoming without making it seem like a big commitment?

I tried a drop in game night with a 6 to 9 window. No sign up just a few chairs out and a couple of easy games on the coffee table. People came and went and it felt fine because there was no big commitment, you could stay 15 minutes or a couple hours.

We posted a simple fridge note that said hang out with games tonight and lined up a few quick games. It helped but there was still that first awkward silence until someone started a round. The vibe got better once the first table formed.

Maybe the real issue isn't turnout but how it's framed. I tried starting with a mingle and then moving to games which felt less pressuring than lets play now.

One night people started bringing their own games and swapping them on a communal shelf. The number stayed around 4 to 6 which felt comfy and lasted a couple hours without feeling loud.

I'm torn about setting a cap and a time limit. We tried capping at 8 and a soft timer but it felt odd. Part of me wants it loose another part wants it to feel like a thing people can count on. Is the problem really turnout?
