What’s better for a 3070: 1440p vs 4K for gaming?
#1
I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, and I’m worried my GPU might not handle the higher resolution well in newer games. My 3070 runs everything fine on my current 1080p screen, but I’m not sure if the visual jump is worth the potential hit to my frame rates.

I swapped from 1080p to 1440p with a 3070 and the image is noticeably crisper. In most games I’m around 100–120fps on high settings, with the occasional dip in the newest releases.

If you’re chasing the sharpness of a higher res without killing the frame rate, DLSS or similar tech helps the 3070 a lot, but not every game supports it equally. In the titles I tested, turning on DLSS Quality kept gameplay smooth while looking noticeably sharper.

Maybe the problem isn’t the resolution at all. If the GPU can keep pace, you’ll still feel a difference, but if you’re chasing perfect, steady frames in competitive play, you might be better off staying at 1080p or choosing a high refresh 1440p panel.

I drifted off topic for a bit when I worried about monitor glow and input lag on a bigger panel. Still, motion clarity matters, and sometimes it comes down to the panel tech, not just the pixel count.

I did a quick test in two games. At 1440p I saw around 110fps in a fast shooter and just under 100fps in a sprawling open world with most settings high. It felt very playable, and the image looked a lot nicer.

Do you mostly play shooters where every frame counts, or do you want the best looking game world even if it costs some frames?
