What’s causing frame time spikes in this shooter and how can I keep 144 fps?

I’m trying to get a stable 144 FPS in the new competitive shooter I play, but my frame times keep spiking during intense team fights. I’ve tried lowering settings from Ultra to a custom mix of Medium and High, which gets me close to my target, but those sudden hitches are still ruining the experience. I’m not sure if this is a driver issue, a background task, or something else entirely.

Same here. I capped at 144 and started killing overlays. When the team fights kicked off, frame times spiked and the HUD stuttered. I closed Discord, turned off GeForce Experience, and set Windows to High Performance. Temps stayed reasonable and GPU usage looked steady, but the spikes still showed up during big skirmishes. It felt like a CPU hiccup more than a GPU one.

I did a clean driver reinstall (DDU) and stuck with the latest official release, then played a couple of sessions with the same settings. Stutters still showed up during rushes. I checked a quick test in another game and it ran smoother, so I started wondering if it isn’t purely a GPU issue. In this title the frame times would jump from about 6-7 ms to 15-20 ms during fights, even though the average FPS hovered near 144.

Also double checked the easy wins: disable all overlays, lock the frame rate, and set the power plan to Maximum Performance. I noticed in task manager that during heavy fights there are intermittent interrupts, and disabling realtime antivirus scanning helped a little but not enough. I even ran a quick DPC latency check and saw spikes when the engine was loading new assets mid fight. It wasn’t a slam dunk, but it pointed to background latency rather than a straight GPU bottleneck.

Could memory bandwidth or anti cheat hooking be the real problem?
