What’s causing washed-out scans on Ubuntu with SANE?
#1
I’ve been trying to get my old scanner working on my fresh Ubuntu 22.04 install, and the whole process has been a bit of a headache with SANE. I finally got it to detect the device, but the scan quality is terrible—washed out and full of lines—and I can’t figure out if it’s a driver issue, a setting I’m missing, or just that this hardware isn’t well-supported anymore.

I ran into that washed out look with SANE on a dusty old flatbed after upgrading. I fiddled with DPI and color versus grayscale, and pushed brightness a bit, but nothing cleaned the lines. It felt more like a hardware or backend mismatch than a quick setting fix.

Grayscale helped me a little more than color, and keeping it around 300 DPI made the tones less brutal. The preview still looked off, but the saved file seemed steadier after I avoided heavy sharpening in the app.

Changed USB cable and port, even tried a powered hub. When the supply was flaky the lines got worse; after swapping cables the scans were somewhat stable but quality stayed poor.

Have you tried another device to rule out the scanner?
