What’s my personal uniform and how can I build a cohesive wardrobe?

I’ve been trying to build a more cohesive wardrobe, but I keep buying pieces that don’t really work with anything else I own. I’ll see a nice shirt or a pair of trousers and think it’s great, but then I get home and realize I have nothing to wear it with. How do you actually figure out what your personal uniform is?

I started by picking three colors I actually wear every day and then bought pieces that fit those colors. That made the idea of a uniform feel possible without turning me into a mannequin. It also cut down stray buys.

I did a simple closet audit for a week and noted what I actually reach for. Then I mapped those pieces to a small set of outfits and looked for gaps.

I kept a log for three months counting how many times each item got worn. The results showed that my favorite pieces were simple basics and a single jacket. The rest never got worn much.

Sometimes the problem is the hanger setup or how the light hits a fabric. If a shirt looks good on the rack but not on the body I try it on with three bottoms and see if it survives the mirror test.

Are you sure the problem is the clothes or could it be how you shop and decide in the moment?

I am not totally sure this even fixes it. I want to make it work but the process feels slow and I keep slipping into impulse buys anyway.
