What’s the best ev charging habit for my daily commute?
#1
I just got my first EV and I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle charging for my daily commute, which is about 50 miles round trip. I have a level 2 charger at home, but I'm wondering if plugging in every single night is actually bad for the battery's long-term health compared to waiting until it gets down to 20 or 30 percent.

Charging every night has been my simplest routine. I drive about 50 miles and I just plug in when I get home. My car's battery software keeps the charge around 70 to 90 percent most days, and I’ve never noticed a dramatic drop from nightly top ups. It feels convenient and I don’t worry about a trickle drain.

I did a little informal test last week. I set the top charging limit to 90 percent and kept topping up nightly, then checked the SOC in the morning after a 50 mile round trip. It would come back around 60 to 65 percent, so the math didn’t feel wasteful and I didn’t notice extra heat or slower charging.

Is the problem really charging pattern or something else? I’ve seen people obsess about SOC and cycles, but maybe the bigger issue for some cars is temperature management or how you actually use the battery during the drive.

Sometimes I start to think about the home electrical panel and the cost of charging after work. Then I remember I mostly drive off peak on weekdays and the day feels fine, but I still keep an eye on calendar days with unusually long trips and plan accordingly.
