What’s the best tool after rotobrush for precise edge masking in After Effects?

I’ve been trying to get better at masking out complex moving objects, like someone’s hair blowing in the wind, and the rotobrush in After Effects just isn’t giving me clean enough edges on the finer details. What’s the next step up from that tool when you need more precision?

I swapped Rotobrush for Mocha Pro when hair got stubborn. Mocha's roto uses splines you can refine into a clean edge and adjust choke so wisps don’t bleed into the cut. Edges around strands look noticeably tighter and there are fewer halos after a pass, but it does take time to learn and it’s not instant.

I’ve tried stacking masks in After Effects too. A rough outer mask plus a second, tighter one to catch the fringe and then feeding the result into a matte can help, especially if you run a tiny feather on the top mask. It’s not perfect, but it cuts down the stray wisps compared to using the automatic roto tool.

Do you have access to Mocha Pro? It’s not cheap, but it handles hair better and the edge quality across motion can be smoother.

I keep bumping into the idea that the real issue might be motion blur and lighting rather than the edge itself. If wind makes hair swing through changing brightness, you end up masking the wrong thing. I’ll sometimes precompose, blur the background slightly, or use a decontaminated matte and tweak the alpha so the mask doesn’t fight the plate.
