What’s the best way to figure out reading order for a comic solo series?

I just got a huge stack of back issues from a friend, but I’m honestly overwhelmed trying to figure out the reading order for this specific character’s solo series. The publication dates jump around because of crossovers, and I don’t want to miss a key development by reading it wrong. How do you all usually tackle something like this?

I admit I felt overwhelmed too, so I did a quick, practical approach. I started with the solo title's first issue and kept a tiny list of the big crossover moments that clearly affect that character. I didn’t chase every tie-in because some felt optional. I treated it like watching a long-running arc and moved forward, then went back if a later issue referenced something I hadn’t read. It helped keep the pile from turning into a backlog of fear.

Do you actually need a perfect order, or would a solid arc-by-arc list that hits the essential moments be enough?

I grabbed a fan wiki reading guide and mapped the sequence, then followed the reading order in publication for the solo title. When a crossover came up that clearly changed the character, I grabbed that issue too, but only if it felt relevant to what was happening in the solo. After a big arc, I checked back to see fallout in the next solo issues so I didn’t miss the thread.

I went off on a tangent once and wandered into a tie-in that seemed intriguing but dragged me away from the main arc for too long. By the time I circled back, I’d forgotten the point I was chasing, so now I try to jot quick reminders instead of letting it derail a night of reading.
