What’s the best way to fix an over-torqued oil drain plug without stripping?
#1
I just tried to change my own oil for the first time and I’m pretty sure I over-torqued the drain plug. The bolt head feels a bit chewed up from my socket and I’m worried about stripping the threads in the pan if I try to take it off again. What’s the best way to approach this without making it worse?

That sounds rough. Do not force it again. Back the plug out slowly with a breaker bar and a good socket so you are turning the bolt not the pan. Check the head and the surrounding threads for obvious damage. If it won't budge or the threads look damaged stop and plan a repair.

I have been there I tried to back it out but the head chewed and I could see metal shavings around the hole. I ended up calling a shop to check if the threads could be saved. They suggested a thread insert or a new plug and a careful leak test. It was not cheap.

Do you know if the threads in the pan are aluminum or steel and what size plug you used?

I once got distracted by the torque math and wandered away from the car The moment I came back I checked the hole with a flashlight and looked for metal shavings before deciding what to do

If you want a quick path the safe move is to have a pro look at it Maybe a thread repair insert or a new pan and a leak test Then you can decide what to do next
