What’s the best way to handle food for a casual board game night?

I’m trying to organize a casual board game night for our neighborhood and I’m stuck on how to handle the food. Do I ask everyone to bring a dish, or should I just provide some simple snacks myself? I don’t want it to feel like a big potluck obligation, but I also don’t want to be scrambling to feed a dozen people.

I did a light potluck once. People brought something small and I kept a couple of simple trays ready—fruit, chips, dip. It kept costs down but I still had to chase a few items the afternoon of.

Last time I just bought snacks—pretzels, popcorn, a fruit tray, soda. It was easy to start playing, and we avoided a big setup. We did run out of cups once and I dashed to the store mid-game, which was a little chaotic.

I wonder if the real issue is timing or seating more than food. If you can set a light snack window and a quick cleanup rule, people might feel less obligated. Is the real problem the food or the setup?

We tried a small grab-and-go setup once. A few labeled bowls by the door let folks snack without slowing the game, and it was calmer for the host. Later, someone argued about what game pairs best with which snack, and we wandered off topic for a bit.
