What’s the best way to manage off-topic chatter on a hobby forum?
#1
I’ve been running a small hobby forum for a few years, and lately I’m struggling with how to handle the off-topic chatter that’s starting to overwhelm the main boards. It feels like the community wants a casual space, but I worry creating a dedicated lounge will completely fragment our discussions and kill the activity on our core topics.

I tried adding a casual space a while back and it did light a little spark. At first there was chatter, memes, quick takes, and it felt good to let people vent a bit. After a few weeks the main boards kept posting, and I started seeing the energy shift as that area pulled more attention. Two moods under one roof, and the core threads got quieter.

I kept hoping it would self-regulate, but the tangents spilled into the main threads anyway and I spent more time babysitting than guiding.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the space itself but whether the core topics are still hitting what people actually want to discuss.

I tried a soft rule and a weekly roundup of the best core-topic posts, hoping to anchor things without killing the vibe. It helped a bit, but the drift kept sneaking back.

Some folks loved the casual pace, others whispered that it felt like the main boards were being neglected. It stirred up complaints and I started doubting myself.

Do you think the problem is attention or something else, like timing or visibility of core threads?
