What’s the best way to plan bus trips when real-time data is unreliable?

I've been trying to switch to taking the bus for my daily commute, but I keep getting thrown off by the inconsistent arrival times. The posted schedule says one thing, but the real-time tracker on the app is often way off, leaving me standing at the stop for fifteen extra minutes some mornings. How do you all actually plan your trips when the real-time information seems unreliable?

I stopped chasing the exact minute. I gave myself a 15 minute cushion and I hang out near a cafe by the stop. The posted time and the tracker rarely line up, but I don’t sprint and stress anymore.

A few weeks I started noting the delays: some mornings the bus is late by around 8 minutes, other days it shows up on time but then sits at the junction. I began using that rough pattern to decide whether to leave earlier or just wait and see.

I keep a tiny notebook and log each morning how long I waited and how long the ride actually took. The data didn’t change the schedule, but it helped me see which trips felt worth the risk and which to avoid.

Do you think the problem is the tracker or the service itself? I keep wondering if the bigger issue is frequency more than tracking.

Sometimes I try to time it by the last few days and end up late anyway, so I started letting the bus roll in and if it’s gone I walk a block and wait for the next one. It’s a trade off.

I’ve started biking on days when the delay looks long. It’s not ideal, but at least I control the pace and I don’t rely on someone else’s timing.
